Meet Alex
I love hearing people's stories--journeys of human experience. So let me share some of my story with you:
Here's the usual (but important) credentials: I earned a BA in Education from Michigan State University, a Master's in Liberal Studies from the New School University of New York City, and a Master's of Social Work from the University of Kansas. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and have worked as a counselor in a variety of settings, helping people with issues across the lifespan. Along the way I've had training in mediation, family systems, and in administering the Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator, a popular and useful tool to aid in understanding yourself and others.

Because coaching offers a sound and positive approach to helping people, I made the transition from counselor to Personal Life Coach, an exciting turn in my Second Adulthood. I am a graduate of Coach University and a member of the International Coach Federation, the professional organization that oversees the ethics and standards of coaching.
Here's the rest (between the lines): I have been through many transitions in my life, relocating and changing careers. While living in New York City I worked as a manager of children's book promotion, as a researcher and reporter for national magazines, and did some freelance writing and oral histories as well as photography; in Chicago I did community promotion, in Kansas City I wrote for the city's news bureau and then returned to school at midlife to get a Master's in Social Work to fulfill a dream of working more closely with others.
As you can see, I've been listening to people's stories in some form or other (oral histories, reporting, counseling). Moving to Boston, I became a work/life balance counselor, working over the telephone to help corporate employees around the country. I have helped scores of people resolve both work and life issues, meet the challenges of juggling personal needs and dealing with the changing workplace.
Why all the moving? A native Long Islander, I lived in New York City for nearly 20 years before marrying a newspaper editor. We always thought there was life beyond New York City and it is true. Besides the experience of learning to relocate and become part of a new community, my biggest personal adventure has been to become a stepmother to two kids, now both grown. We all learned together the challenges and joys of becoming a stepfamily. Other life adventures include a boat trip down the Colorado River, a bike trip through Vermont, travel in Europe, and spending a few weeks in a Zen monastery.
My husband and I and our two cats now live near Boston in a wonderful old port city, near a barrier island. One of my favorite pastimes is walking on the beach lost in a sea shell search or just scanning nature's panorama, and nurturing my garden to blossom with color. I love information and reading, tennis, swimming and yoga. Aspirations include: learning to fiddle, beading and sculpting.
I bring my diverse career and life experiences and as well as my training to coaching. I value lifelong learning; it has been essential to my own development and continues to make my life gratifying. I love coaching people and being there for my clients as they rediscover and reclaim their lives.
